This residential landscape project illustrates how a strategic blend of homeowner involvement and professional construction can significantly reduce costs without compromising design quality. The homeowners were eager to be hands-on where it made sense—while relying on experienced contractors for technically complex and equipment-intensive work. Our role was to guide this hybrid approach, ensuring clarity, coordination, and a cohesive final result.

The Challenge

The clients wanted a professionally designed landscape but needed to manage construction costs carefully. They were comfortable taking on demolition and planting themselves, but recognized that certain aspects—grading, hardscape installation, lawn establishment, and irrigation—required specialized knowledge and heavy equipment. Design & Planning Strategy

Knowing When to Bring in the Professionals

Certain aspects of the project required expertise that goes beyond typical DIY capabilities. Grading and drainage needed to be executed correctly to protect the home and hardscape. Hardscape installation demanded accuracy and durability. Irrigation and lawn installation required technical knowledge to ensure long-term performance. By bringing in experienced contractors for these components, the project benefited from proper use of heavy equipment, efficient installation timelines, long-term durability and performance, and reduced risk of rework or failure.
