The landscape design for this new Portland commercial development meets the City of Portland’s landscape code requirements while prioritizing long-term sustainability, functionality, and ease of maintenance. The planting palette emphasizes drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, predominantly evergreen species with limited pollinator attraction, providing year-round visual appeal. Plant selection and placement also considered pollinator activity, favoring less floriferous species near outdoor dining areas while incorporating seasonal flowering and fragrance at the street entrance. Plantings were selected and spaced with mature size in mind to provide complete landscape coverage while reducing future pruning and maintenance needs. Dense planting also helps suppress weeds, further reducing ongoing maintenance costs. A water-efficient drip irrigation system was designed to deliver water directly to plant root zones, eliminating overspray onto adjacent hardscapes.
